Greenpeace is Still Searching for Green Electronics

Are you planning to buy a cell phone? Or maybe a laptop? Check this list before you decide what brand you are getting yourself into. They might seem harmless and Eco-friendly, but only Greenpeace knows what’s best for our environment. Electronics may have its impact on all areas in our life except one: environment.

We already saw Samsung solar-powered cell phone as their green steps. However, it tickles me on how significant it is compared to Samsung total waste in their factory. According to Greenpeace, the list of eco-friendly electronic brands is as following (starting from the best):

  1. Nokia
  2. Dell
  3. HP
  4. Sony Ericsson
  5. Samsung
  6. Sony
  7. LG Electronics
  8. Panasonic
  9. Toshiba
  10. Fujitsu Siemens Computers
  11. Apple (!!!)
  12. Acer
  13. Motorola
  14. Lenovo

Now tell me how ‘green’ are your electronics? Take green steps to help our environment now starting from your electronic devices.

Step 61: Just Like Our Green ‘Idol’: Lisa Simpson!

Eco-friendly Lisa Simpson
Eco-friendly Lisa Simpson

After having Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie, you might think that 1000 Green Steps was joking by putting Lisa Simpson as our Green Idol for this edition. And so that you know, we’re not.

You guys have already heard about The Simpsons Movie, right? In that movie that eight-year-old Lisa warned Springfield community about the harm of toxic pollution. That heart-touching moment implicitly showed us that Lisa had influenced her generation to get educated and informed about the danger of damaged ecology. And not just that, she had already inspired many young generations to wear their hearts to solve global issues.

1000 Green Steps can’t tolerate if an eight-year-old girl can do that but you couldn’t.

Cows Eating Garbage
Cows Eating Garbage

Sounds so simple, but saying is always easier than doing it. Follow these 5 tips from 1000 Green Steps to find yourself ‘cured’ from your littering addiction. Act now!

1. Think about the danger

Think about how one plastic bag left on the ground would affect your environment and soil. Think about the money that has to go to waste to hire people to collect that garbage. Are YOU ready to get blamed?

2. Get yourself informed

Do you know that the several trillion toxic cigarette butts littered worldwide annually are responsible for fatal fires and the deaths of numerous mammals, birds and reptiles that eat them? Get yourself informed and I’m 100% sure you will not litter anymore if you still got heart.

3. Make an effort

Try to find a trash can anywhere or simply keep a litter bag in your car at anytime. You won’t have an excuse if you do so :P

4. Just pick it up!

The simplest way but might happen to be the hardest one if you didn’t get use to it. Try it and you’ll regret why you didn’t start it earlier.

5. See the right people

Join the right communities such as these organizations 1000 Green Steps found for you: Keep America Beautiful or Adopt a Road program.

Step 54: DIY Striped T-Shirt!

DIY Striped T-shirt
DIY Striped T-shirt

As promised, now 1000 Green Steps would like to share this information 1000 Green Steps got from a friend. So yes, it’s not really our own idea but he allowed me to tell everybody else, so here we go!

  1. Find an old T-shirt you don’t want anymore (preferably if it is dark plain colored).
  2. Use a duct tape to make your stripes.
  3. Spray your t-shirt with a bleach/water mixture. Use 70% bleach and 30% water. Let your shirt dry after you spray it to your liking.
  4. Wash it and it is ready!

So you see? Instead of throwing them away to the trash bin in your house, you can still use them after doing a little effort to transform it into a brand new T-shirt.

But if you still don’t want to reuse it, still 1000 Green Steps encourage you all to donate them to people who need those T-shirts or just do a garage sale and make yourself some money.

Step 52: 3 Steps to Turn Your Business Green

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Sounds impossibe? Totally not! 1000 Green Steps will just implement the same exact 3R tips to be done in your business environment. Easy. Simple. Doable.

Reduce

You can reduce your electricity usage by turning off equipments you are not using. Get used to the behavior to turn off the computers at the end of your day and easily cut back 50% energy usage.

Avoid printing everything out of your computer. If it’s not necessary, then try to reduce paper waste starting from there.

Reuse

If you really have to print things on paper, try to print them on recycled paper or print them using both sides of the paper.

Change your office equipment into more eco-friendly office supplies which often offer the ability to be reused after you are done with them.

Recycle

Make sure that you provide many recycling bins for all of your company staff. So that everyone will know where to recycle those unwanted paper sheets. You can even make a contest among office departments so that everyone will do their part as much as they can to improve our environment.

Contact a recycling company so someone can handle your company recycling needs correctly.

It’s very simple right? Educate your staff and implement what you’ve learned for Mother Nature.

Step 51: Just Like Our ‘Green’ Idol: Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie as Goodwill Ambassador
Angelina Jolie as Goodwill Ambassador

Angelina Jolie is not exactly the greenest celebrities 1000 Green Steps have ever seen. However her effort to sacrifice her personal life to make people become greener is something we should give applause for. Jolie is a Goodwill Ambassador for the U.N. Refugee Agency for 5 years, which assists around 20 million refugees in over 100 countries.

Jolie even made a website containing her personal journal from her various visits to the world with the U.N., including Sudan, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Ecuador and Namibia. Angelina is one celebrity using her status to focus media attention toward something other than herself.

Jolie has received various awards including UNCA Citizen of the World by the U.N. Correspondents Association and the Global Humanitarian Action Award from the U.N. Association of the USA and the Business Council for the United Nations.

Now it is our turn to take the action. Start from trying to influence people around us to care about environment.

Step 50: Eco-friendly Interior by Rodrigo Alonso

Everything is just really going eco-friendly lately! Just look at this beautiful designed lamp. Who says that eco-friendly lamp can’t have a sophisticated design? These lamps are made of rotomolding, in a mix of low density plastic with crushed electronic waste plastic. Its base is even produced with smelted aluminum of beer and drink tins! It is very cool 1000 Green Steps even wanted one for ourselves.

The name of the lamp is N+EW Light which is an abbreviation for No More Electronic Waste. So it is clear now that the main goal of this project is to reduce electronic waste in our environment.

If that is not enough, you can match your N+EW Light with N+EW Handmade Stool! Yes, it is handmade and made of electronic waste, epoxic resin and melted aluminum. These stools are one of a kind and only made through special orders.

Who’s behind this? Actually this project is made by Rodrigo Alonso, a graphic designer with recognized experience in the world of publicity. He has a noticeable academic of different universities and workshops in Chile and Latin America. He has worked in the image of large international brands as Renault, Lucky Strike, Warner Bros, and Sony. He is the one who created of the studio-laboratory Müsuc.
