Wake-up Rested

It is painful for many of us to get up in the ring of an alarm clock before we’d naturally wake up.

We go through 4-6 “sleep cycles” every night. Each cycle is composed of five stages: stages 1-4 and the rapid eye movement (REM) stage. Stage 4 is very deep sleep and REM is the stage we are likely to have dreams.

Waking up during a deep stage sleep is very difficult. You can feel disoriented and tired. Most people reach their deepest sleep between 4 – 6 a.m. So it is hard to wake up during that time.

Scheduling your time to go to bed may help you wake up feeling more refreshed.

Each sleep cycle lasts an average of 90 minutes. If you need 8 hours of sleep each night, you can count backwards from when you have to wake up to determine when you need to go to bed.

However, people require different length of sleep, and sleep cycle length also varies in individuals. So you have to listen to your body and figure out your sleep schedule.
