According to a company press release, the entire product lifecycle of each 64-ounce carton of orange juice contributes an estimated 3.75 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere.

By comparison, a car that gets 20 mpg emits about 1.0 pound of CO2 for each mile driven.

The Carbon Trust has certified PepsiCo’s analysis, making Tropicana Orange Juice the first consumer product in North America to achieve a verifiable benchmark against which the company can measure greenhouse gas reduction.

Here’s a breakdown of the components of the carbon footprint:

• 60 percent of the carbon footprint is related to agricultural and manufacturing-related processes (mostly the fertilizers used in grove management and the energy required to process oranges)
• 22 percent of the carbon footprint comes from transportation and distribution
• 15 percent can be attributed to packaging
• the remaining 3 percent comes from consumer use and disposal

It uses 1.5 million gallons of oil to just make the plastic bottles every year, not counting fuels used to transport them. The burning of oil emits pollutants into the environment and attributes to global warming.

Water at areas near bottling plants is over extracted, which affects nearby residents and farmers. Also it wastes 2 gallons of water to purify 1 gallon of bottled water.

Ninety percent of the plastic bottles are not recycled and end up in the landfill.

You will save both the environment and money if you drink tap water instead of bottled water. The U.S. EPA’s standards for tap water are actually more stringent then the U.S. FDA standards for bottled water.

If you are concerned or don’t like the taste of tap water, consider a filter pitcher or a faucet filter.

While traveling, fill a reusable bottle with tap water and refill it on the way.

7-Eleven, Inc. has opened a green Commissary and Combined Distribution Center (CCD) in Long Island, New York as their company’s green steps. Fresh foods are prepared at the new environmentally-friendly facility and delivered to 674 7-Eleven stores in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The 130,000 square-foot high-tech center includes features to conserve energy, water usage, and utility costs. In addition, a sophisticated inventory and computerized ordering system allows sandwiches, salads, and baked goods to be efficiently prepared on the same day they are ordered.

The CCD qualified for rate incentives and gas efficiency rebates from the National Grid, the local utility.

Everything is just really going eco-friendly lately! Just look at this beautiful designed lamp. Who says that eco-friendly lamp can’t have a sophisticated design? These lamps are made of rotomolding, in a mix of low density plastic with crushed electronic waste plastic. Its base is even produced with smelted aluminum of beer and drink tins! It is very cool 1000 Green Steps even wanted one for ourselves.

The name of the lamp is N+EW Light which is an abbreviation for No More Electronic Waste. So it is clear now that the main goal of this project is to reduce electronic waste in our environment.

If that is not enough, you can match your N+EW Light with N+EW Handmade Stool! Yes, it is handmade and made of electronic waste, epoxic resin and melted aluminum. These stools are one of a kind and only made through special orders.

Who’s behind this? Actually this project is made by Rodrigo Alonso, a graphic designer with recognized experience in the world of publicity. He has a noticeable academic of different universities and workshops in Chile and Latin America. He has worked in the image of large international brands as Renault, Lucky Strike, Warner Bros, and Sony. He is the one who created of the studio-laboratory Müsuc.

The company plans to:

• Replace about 8,000 gasoline-powered vehicles with vehicles powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) over the next five years. This is the largest U.S. corporate commitment to CNG vehicles to date.

• Replace 7,100 passenger cars with alternative-fuel models over the next 10 years.

According to AT&T, the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Ann Arbor, Mich., estimates that over the 10-year deployment period, the new vehicles will save 49 million gallons of gasoline and reduce carbon emissions by 211,000 metric tons. That is equivalent to removing the emissions from more than 38,600 traditional passenger vehicles for a year. What a green step!
