1000 Green Steps have been talking a lot on how flying around with a plane can boost up your amount of carbon footprint. However, There some cases where people just have to take a flight to finish their work otherwise they’re fired. Now if you are one of those people, 1000 Green Steps have some easy solutions for you that ight make you feel less guilty for finishing your job.

Now all you have to do is to choose your airline wisely. You’ll never guessed how various the carbon offset release for the exact same route because different airlines use different equipment on similar routes. This can yield surprising variability in emissions on the same trip.

Using figures from Terra Pass for the sake of comparison a flight from New York to Los Angeles and back emits 1,436 lbs of CO2. (That may be a low figure due to the way Terra Pass calculates radiative forcing, but we’ll leave that aside…)

But entering in specific airlines yields the following results for the same journey: American Airlines = 1,618 lbs of CO2; Delta = 1,280 lbs; Qantas = 1,340 lbs; United Airlines = 1,976 lbs; Virgin America = 1,409 lbs.

They don’t always have that many different options for every route, but when you are presented with them, it is worth examining and choosing your airline based on that.

Now hold on a bit, I know you are surprised and now yelling in your mind about ‘What the hell is so green about that’. To some extent, you’re mind set is already correct where McDonalds’ was supposed to be not on our green list because they are one of the most un-green company around. However, it changed with their latest product.

Ever since they started selling organic coffee in the Northeastern US, it’s actually been a good place to find cheap, green coffee. The coffee is made by Newman’s Own, a fantastic, eco-conscious company.

Which bottle caps are going to be recycled and which ones are not? Actually, the lids have different type of plastic from the bottle itself. Sometimes, your recycler may not accept this different plastic, and the lids end up getting sent to landfills in the recycling process. AVEDA, will accept those lids to be recycled to be turned into new packaging for Aveda products, like hair color and shampoo.

You can determine if you have the right kind of plastic by checking to see if the lid is:

A twist top, or a cap with a threaded neck (think: shampoo, water, soda, milk)

A flip-top cap from a tube or food product bottle (think: ketchup, mayonnaise)

A laundry detergent or peanut butter lid

Rigid and resistant to tears (think: can you bend or break the lid with your hands?)

Now that we know that email could be the greenest method of delivering mails, do you know which ones are really green?

Gmail or Google does a remarkable job greening its massive data centers, using techniques such as water evaporation for cooling, and in general streamlining their electrical infrastructure. He says “They even take the Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) out of their servers to lessen energy requirements.” Google takes other steps to reduce the carbon footprint of its data centers, such as using renewable energy in some of them, recycling their cooling water, and so on.

Another recommended green company would be Hotmail, since it used a lot of green techniques in their offices, too.

Easy all-purpose cleaner: Mix one teaspoon liquid soap or borax per quart of warm water. Try a splash of lemon juice or white vinegar to help cut kitchen grease.

Spray starch: Dissolve one tablespoon cornstarch into a pint of water for an equal spray starch substitute. Pour it into a spray bottle and use on your laundry as needed.

Oven cleaner alternative: Combine two tablespoons liquid soap and two teaspoons borax in a spray bottle and top them off with warm water. Spray the mixture directly onto caked oven gunk and let it soak for about 20 minutes. Scour the oven bottom with steel wool, and the caked on food should come right off.
