Boon Edam, a market leader in entrance technology, recently introduced the world’s first energy-generating revolving door as their green steps.

The door is part of the newly-refurbished Driebergen-Zeist railway station in the Netherlands. Architects and engineers designed the entire station with an eye toward energy conservation and sustainability.

Revolving doors already have a well-deserved reputation as energy-savers. For instance, compared to a conventional sliding entrance, Boon Edam estimates that this particular revolving door will save about 4600 kWh per year.

However, the company designed this door to do even more: it actually generates energy as every person passes through.

The human energy applied to the door generates power for low energy LED lights in its ceiling. Then, if passenger flow is insufficient, the unit switches to an alternative main supply in the building. An LED indicator lets users know when the lights are being powered by human energy, and the total amount of energy generated by the door is tallied and displayed inside the station.
