The $875,000 solar-powered rooftop system will provide cool air to dehumidfy the company’s 11 acres of factory operations, thus protecting the pianos inside. The system, which will be complete this spring, is funded in part by federal tax credits and a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

“Steinway has always been an innovative and progressive company; it’s part of the company’s culture,” says Andrew Horbachevsky, Steinway’s Vice President of Manufacturing, in a press release. “This begins with a bold vision. Our objective is to continue to challenge the status quo, whether in piano performance and quality, product offerings or factory operational efficiency. Using renewable energy sources reflects this same sensibility.”

Steinway’s rooftop system pumps solar-heated water into an 80-ton double-effect absorption chiller. The system can either produce cool air for dehumidifying or steam for heating the factory in the winter months.
